Sworn, certified, apostille: which one do you need?
- Apostille proves that a foreign public document is genuine. It is added to the original by the country that issued it (in the US, the Secretary of State of the state). It comes first, and it must be translated too.
- Sworn translation (asseverata) is a translation the translator swears to before an Italian court or notary. Italian comuni, courts and many offices require it.
- Certified translation is signed by a professional translator with a statement of accuracy. Many consulates and most offices outside Italy accept it.
For Italian citizenship by descent
Your US, Canadian or other birth, marriage and death certificates, and often those of your parents and grandparents, need an apostille and an Italian translation. Tell us where you are applying, at a consulate or a comune in Italy, and we tell you which translation they accept before you pay anything. Need your ancestor’s Italian records too? We retrieve those as well.

Questions
What is a sworn translation (traduzione giurata)?
A translation the translator swears is accurate, in front of a court clerk, a justice of the peace or a notary in Italy. The sworn statement, the translation and the original are bound together and stamped. It is what most Italian offices mean when they ask for an official translation.
I am applying for Italian citizenship. What do I need?
Usually your birth and marriage certificates, and those of your parents, with an apostille from the issuing country and an Italian translation. Many consulates accept a translation made by a sworn or certified translator; comuni in Italy usually ask for a sworn one. Tell us where you are applying and we tell you what they accept.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the number of pages and on whether the translation must be sworn. The estimator on this page gives you an idea; the quote is fixed and includes the stamps and the court swearing.
How long does it take?
Usually 5 to 7 business days for a sworn translation of a few certificates, plus courier time. Urgent work is possible: tell us your date.
Do you also translate Italian records into English?
Yes, for example Italian birth or death records you need in the US, UK or Canada. Most of those uses need a certified translation, not a sworn one.
