Inherited something in Italy? We handle the Italian side from start to finish

When a relative dies with a house, land or a bank account in Italy, the heirs must file a succession declaration with the Italian Revenue Agency within 12 months, pay the tax themselves and transfer the property. From abroad it is a maze. We do it for you, with a fixed fee agreed before we start.

Estimate the Italian inheritance tax

Rough figures are fine. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How it works

  1. Free assessmentYou tell us what you know. Within two business days we reply with what the estate is likely to contain, the deadlines, an estimate of the tax and a fixed fee.
  2. We find everythingProperty searches across Italy in the name of the deceased, cadastral records, bank and post office balances, the death and family certificates.
  3. Declaration and taxAn Italian accountant (commercialista) we work with prepares and files the succession declaration online. Since 2025 heirs calculate the tax themselves: we do the calculation and tell you exactly what to pay, how and by when.
  4. Property transferredThe land registry is updated in the heirs’ names (voltura catastale). If you want to sell, we can connect you with a local agent and a notary.

What we do for you

  • Property search in the deceased’s name across all of Italy
  • Death, family and residency certificates from the Italian offices
  • Succession declaration filed with the Agenzia delle Entrate by an Italian accountant
  • Tax calculation and payment instructions (you pay the tax, never through us)
  • Land registry transfer (voltura catastale) to the heirs
  • Written updates in English at every step

Not included

  • Italian taxes and duties, paid by the heirs directly to the State
  • Notary fees, if you sell or if there is a will to publish
  • Court work if heirs disagree: we refer you to a lawyer

Italian inheritance tax in 2026, in plain English

Italy taxes what each heir receives, after an exemption that depends on how close the heir was to the person who died. Since 1 January 2025 the heirs, not the tax office, calculate the tax and pay it within 90 days of the filing deadline.

HeirTax-free per heirRate above it
Spouse, children, grandchildren, parents€1,000,0004%
Brothers and sisters€100,0006%
Other relatives up to the 4th degree, in-lawsnone6%
Anyone elsenone8%
Heir with a recognised severe disability€1,500,000by relationship

On property there are two more taxes, due once whoever inherits: the mortgage tax (2%) and the cadastral tax (1%) of the cadastral value, with a minimum of €200 each. If one heir can claim the first-home relief, they become €200 each. Tax can be paid in instalments when it is €1,000 or more.

Deadlines that matter

  • 12 months from the death to file the succession declaration.
  • 90 days after that deadline to pay the self-assessed tax.
  • The land registry transfer (voltura catastale) is requested with the same declaration, so the property passes to the heirs in one step.

Even when no tax is due, the declaration is usually needed to transfer property or release a bank account.

Questions

What is the deadline?

The succession declaration must be filed within 12 months of the death. Since 2025 the heirs calculate the tax themselves and pay it within 90 days of that deadline. Late filing brings penalties, which grow with time, so it is worth starting early.

How much tax will we pay?

For a spouse or children the rate is 4% only on the part above €1,000,000 per heir, so most families pay no succession tax at all. Siblings pay 6% above €100,000 each, other relatives 6% and everyone else 8%. On property there are also mortgage and cadastral taxes, 2% and 1% of the cadastral value, or €200 each if an heir uses the first-home relief. Use the estimator on this page for a first idea.

Do all heirs have to come to Italy?

No. The declaration is filed online by the accountant on your behalf. Each heir signs an authorization and sends a copy of their ID. You only travel if you choose to sell in person in front of a notary, and even that can often be done by power of attorney.

We don’t even know what is in Italy.

That is common. We start with a national property search in the deceased’s name and with requests to banks and Poste Italiane. You get a written summary before deciding anything.

Do we need an Italian tax code?

Yes, each heir needs a codice fiscale. If you don’t have one we request it for you as part of the work.

Is the assessment really free?

Yes. You get a written reply and a fixed fee. You pay nothing unless you accept the quote.

Who we are

Pratiq is an online service run by Italians that deals with Italian offices on people’s behalf: registered letters, land-registry searches, family records and the paperwork in this page. We work from San Marino, next to Italy, with Italian accountants and translators, and a person answers every email. We are not a law firm: when a case needs a lawyer, we tell you.
