Got an Italian traffic or ZTL fine at home? Check it before you pay

Many visitors to Italy get a fine for entering a limited traffic zone (ZTL) or speeding, often from a rental car, months after they flew home. Some are valid, some arrived too late, some are billed twice. Check the dates for free below, then let us look at the notice for you.

How it works

  1. Free date checkThe checker on this page tells you in seconds whether the notice arrived within the legal time limit and how long you have to appeal.
  2. Send us the noticeUpload photos of the notice and pay for the check. You can upload at night from your phone.
  3. Our written opinionWithin two business days: a full English translation, what the fine is for, whether the dates, amounts and photos hold up, and our recommendation.
  4. Pay or appealIf paying is the right call, we tell you exactly how to pay from abroad. If there are grounds, we write the appeal in Italian, you sign it, we file it and follow it.

What we do for you

  • English translation of the notice
  • Check of notification deadlines, amounts, rental-company fees and double billing
  • Written opinion: pay, appeal, or wait for the authority to respond
  • How to pay from abroad without paying more than you owe
  • With the appeal package: appeal to the Prefetto in Italian, filed by certified email (PEC), and follow-up until the decision

Not included

  • The fine itself, if it turns out to be due
  • Appeals to the Justice of the Peace (Giudice di Pace): they need a court fee and we refer you to a lawyer
  • Fines already passed to debt collection (cartella), which follow different rules

When a fine can be challenged

Most fines are valid, and then the cheapest thing is to pay quickly, with the discount. These are the cases where it is worth looking closer:

  • It arrived too late. More than 360 days after the police could identify you, for drivers living abroad.
  • Several fines for one trip through the ZTL. Entering and leaving the same zone can produce more than one fine; in some cities and situations only one is due.
  • You were allowed in. Hotels inside many ZTLs can register your plate for the night you arrived, but often have to do it within a short time. If they did, or should have, the fine can be cancelled.
  • Wrong details. The wrong plate, vehicle, place or a missing camera approval can make the notice void.
  • Formal defects. Missing details about how to pay or appeal, or rules on information and language for drivers in other EU countries that were not followed, can matter in some cases.

Prefetto or Justice of the Peace?

The appeal to the Prefetto is free, written, and does not need a lawyer, but if it is rejected the amount usually doubles. The appeal to the Justice of the Peace has a court fee and is better with a lawyer. We prepare and file appeals to the Prefetto; for the court we refer you to a lawyer.

Questions

They sent it a year after my trip. Is that legal?

Possibly. For drivers living abroad, Italian law allows the authority 360 days from when it identified the driver to notify the fine, instead of 90 days. With a rental car the clock starts only when the rental company gives your details to the police, so a notice that arrives a year after the trip can still be on time. The checker gives a first answer, the fine check gives a definitive one.

How long do I have to appeal?

An appeal to the Prefetto must be filed within 60 days of receiving the notice and costs nothing. An appeal to the Justice of the Peace must be filed within 30 days, or 60 days if you live abroad, and has a court fee.

What is the risk of appealing?

If the Prefetto rejects the appeal, the amount usually becomes at least double the minimum fine, and you lose the discount for paying early. That is why we only recommend an appeal when there are concrete grounds, and why the check comes first.

Can I get a discount for paying quickly?

Many Italian fines are reduced by 30% if paid within 5 days of notification. Payment within 60 days avoids the increase. Notices often explain this in Italian only: we tell you the exact amount and deadline.

The rental company already charged my card. Is that the fine?

Usually not. Rental companies charge an administration fee for passing your details to the police. The fine itself arrives later from the city. We check both.

What happens if I ignore it?

The authority can pass the fine to debt collection, and in many EU countries it can be enforced through cross-border rules. It can also come back when you rent a car or drive in Italy again. Checking it is cheaper than ignoring it.
