Gym cancellation letter

What to include

• Your full name, address and email.
• Your member ID or agreement number.
• A clear sentence: “I am writing to cancel my membership, effective immediately, or the earliest date allowed under my agreement.”
• A request to stop recurring charges and not to renew.
• A request for written confirmation of the end date.
• Date and signature.

Where to send it

Most chains are franchised, so the letter goes to your home club. The address is on your membership agreement and usually on the club’s page on the chain’s website. Some chains use a central address: LA Fitness, for example, accepts its cancellation form at a P.O. Box in Irvine, California.

Timing

Deadlines count from when the club receives your letter. Planet Fitness, for example, needs your request by the 10th to stop the charge on the 17th. Many agreements require 30 days’ notice, so send it early.

Proof

Certified Mail gives you a tracking number and a delivery record; with a Return Receipt you also get the signature. Keep them with a copy of the letter until you’ve seen your last charge stop.
